Ron Taino Gran Añejo comes from the Dominican Republic. The rum is aged for five years in bourbon barrels. The producers found inspiration for the name in South American history and mythology. Taino was an indigenous culture living in what is now the Dominican Republic.
The name of the rum is inspired by the first settlers of the island of Hispaniola, which is now the territory of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. When Christopher Columbus arrived here in 1492, he mistakenly thought he had sailed to India. In fact, he discovered America and encountered the local indigenous culture, the Taino. They inhabited not only Hispaniola, but also other Caribbean islands - the Antilles and Cuba.
The bottle label depicts Atabey, the mother of all Taino and one of the supreme beings in Taino mythology. She was worshipped as the Earth, the embodiment of nature and fertility. This female entity also represents the patron of all waters - lakes, streams and seas, the guardian of the tides. No wonder she was revered by Taino members and was one of the most important deities.
Rum has a sweet, rich taste. There are notes of citrus and peach in the aroma, along with a hint of wood. The taste shows fruit, vanilla and caramel, with a creamy finish.
Ron Taino is produced in the Dominican distillery Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos (AFD). The distillery has been operating since 2010 and currently employs 4000 people. The sugar cane used to produce the individual rums comes mainly from the distillery's own land. Sustainability is also important to the distillery, which is why it produces all the energy it needs from biomass provided by bagasse (sugar cane pomace).
